Biosafety for Work at BSL-2 Containment Level
(90 minutes)

This course is approximately 1.5 hrs long. This course contains information about working in a BSL-2 lab at UVM. This is an in-person classroom training.

Participants are expected to have completed at a minimum the following on-line safety trainings:

  • Biowaste Management Procedures
  • Safe Use of Biosafety Cabinets

Participants are expected to have completed the following on-line CITI trainings: (Login "Through My Institution")

  • BSL-2 Basic Course
  • OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens (if your lab uses these materials)

Emergency Response for Laboratory Workers
(90 minutes)

This training is required by all lab personnel and is offered once per month during the summer months and 2x per month in the Fall and Spring semesters.

You will learn to identify, assess and respond to a variety of small and large emergency situations in a UVM laboratory. Several real life examples are presented. Please complete the 4 required online lab safety trainings BEFORE you attend this training. You will not be allowed to attend if you have not done so.

This training is presented ONLINE in ZOOM. You will receive a link to the training the night before. More information about what trainings are required can be found at Train and Inform Personnel website.


Participants are expected to have completed at a minimum the following on-line safety trainings:

  • Chemical Safety in the Laboratory
  • Chemical Waste Disposal Training
  • Laboratory Safety Roles and Responsibilities
  • Laboratory Ventilation and Chemical Fume Hoods (2019)

Fire Extinguisher Training
(90 minutes)

Hands-on Fire Extinguisher training for faculty, staff and students. Learn how to extinguish a small incipient fire using a simulator. *This training is weather dependent and subject to short-notice cancellation*.

Keeping Your Lab Safe
(90 minutes)

NOTE: This course is currently offered online via Teams. You will receive invites to the team and the meeting the day before the training.

This course reviews the best laboratory safety practices outlined in the UVM laboratory self inspection card and provides tips and tricks for making part of your everyday lab work.

Using SciShield in the Research Lab

Not sure how to use SciShield for your lab? This course gives an introduction into aspects of the members, trainings, and ChemTracker information within this new system. This course is for PIs and Co-investigators who are learning and have questions about implementing this new system.
